Adrift in the Reeds

"Adrift in the Reeds captures the experience of drifting through wetlands. I layered my subject and reeds in‑camera as a double exposure. The ethereal image invites us to feel at one with fragile aquatic ecosystems." - Christoffer Relander

Azure

Amazon Domestic - Azure celebrates collective femininity, through the Amazonian myth of resilience and solidarity. Black ink marks, intricate thread work and a collaged skirt, symbolising domesticity and collective empowerment.

Bodies in Pleasure

This artwork reworks the Japanese Shunga imagery, using mechanical imprints to fracture the erotic form. By disrupting traditional lines, it subverts the male gaze and reclaims female agency.

Burgundy Plum

A befitting background for the Amazonian Myth - Burgundy, the colour of queens, regal and ancient. Collaged world map horse, luminous with its female rider in a beautiful herringbone skirt. The cyborg pleasure marks depicting sensuality and the sacred feminine.

Candy Road

"After dropping my daughter off at her nanny, I took the long way home through the countryside and ended up in a place I hadn’t visited since I was a kid. It turned into one of those nostalgic moments where old memories start rushing back. I used to bike down this road to visit an old widow who always kept the best snacks ready, just in case someone stopped by." - Christoffer Relander

Cherry Blossoms

A reimagining of Amazonian myth: fragmented feminine form and black ink marks made with vibrators (sex toys) resist the male gaze, while the world-map horse signals movement and reclamation

"Here two slender pines rest inside a jar. Using in‑camera double exposure, I photographed the jar and then layered the trees, allowing them to lean toward one another. The minimal composition feels intimate and speaks of companionship." - Christoffer Relander

"This piece holds the venerable Old Tjikko inside a mason jar. I shot the jar and tree separately on film and layered them in‑camera using analog double exposure. The monochrome palette adds a muted, dreamlike mood—my way of preserving an ancient tree in glass." - Christoffer Relander

Pine Forest

"I wanted to compress an entire pine forest into a bottle. I photographed the jar and then overlaid a dense Finnish forest via in-camera double exposure. The mood is dark and introspective, as if you’re holding a private woodland." - Christoffer Relander

"To make Jarred Reed I stood on a rocky outcrop and captured the empty jar before layering a bed of reeds in a second exposure on film. The in‑camera process means the slender stems fill the glass organically, creating a delicate, lyrical mood." - Christoffer Relander

Resilience

Striped Green Kimono

A striped green kimono with black ink marks camouflages the identity in this painting. There is no telling if the body is male or female. The work subverts biopolitical notions of sex, desire and pleasure that historically subjugate female agency.

Abstract figures huddled under a Japanese kotatsu (traditional Japanese furniture). The cyborg marks made with pleasure devices tickles ones imagination. A combination of abstract expressionism and eroticism deconstructs historical ideas of erotica, objectification and sensuality.

UNVEILING

The painting symbolises a person's journey of self-discovery, of finally realising their true self and embracing authenticity. In that moment, they finally become one with the world around them.

When you finally find joy. From always being confused to finally understanding what you were looking for all this time. In that moment of love and embrace, you find the universe and the universe finds you.
